I wrote a poem about Oscar a couple of years ago. You can find it under "Oscar's Gift" on my blog Poetikat's Invisible Keepsakes.

Thanks for your comment, Paul. Most of the people in our small group bought and read the book. Some were so moved by it that they got it for their friends as well. I'll be posting a review soon of a brilliant book I'm reading at the moment called 'Jesus through Middle Eastern Eyes' by Kenneth Bailey. One for the Christmas stocking, perhaps. Please feel free to add a book review or two of your own.

I read "The Shack" a while ago and found it very moving. The relationships within the Trinity were explored creatively and thoughtfully. I particularly liked the way they worked together to help the main character. God's love for me seems even more special when I think that it's actually the love of three people in perfect harmony!

One of the blogs I follow by Scott McKnight has just posted an article on the very passages I've just been writing about. To be honest, I think his insights are much more profound than mine... "Jesus cut up the Ten Commandments into love God commands and love other commands. The Sabbath was traditionally understood as a day of sanctity toward God, a day wherein one did not work at all. Hence, it became a day where focus on God was paramount ... and Jesus saw a crack. Some were so devoted to Sabbath's sanctity that they failed to show mercy to those in need. Herein lies the genius of Jesus when it comes to Sabbath: "rest" means dwelling in the world as God would have it. That means loving God (worship, obedience, etc) and loving others (doing good on Sabbath). So, for Jesus, the Sabbath straddles the love God commands and the love others commands."

Some questions for further reflection:1. What should be the guiding principles for Christians wanting to observe a 'sabbath day of rest'?2. How many rules and traditions do we need to preserve - not only for ourselves, but also for teaching our children?3. How can we understand the severe penalties imposed on Sabbath breakers in the OT?4. What does the scriptural teaching on Sabbath observance tell us about imposing restrictions on non-believers?5. Sabbath observance was one of the ways in which the Jew stood out from his/her non-Jewish peers. Is there anything in our lives that make us stand out as 'different'?6. Jesus loved to do good for others on the Sabbath. How can we follow his example?

Karen, this sounds like a good idea. Perhaps we could start with downloading one of the studies and using it alternating with the bible study weeks.

I've been thinking about study aids and Sojourners produce studies around themes and based on articles by their writers. They can be downloaded as .pdf files for a reasonble price. I'm particularly interested in the studies on poverty, non-violence and trade justice. I think most of the studies run to 4 sessions. What do you think?
